Ryan's Book Review: Born Standing Up

Born Standing Up by Steve Martin

Steve Martin, The All Being
Comedy Is Not Pretty (1979)

Synopsis: Steve Martin tells the story of when he was really funny but doesn't tell the story of why he decided to doing schmaltzy movies like Father of the Bride.

Review: I don't really know why, but I've always loved Steve Martin.  Maybe it's because I knew he got started at Disneyland.  But anyway, this book is pretty good.  The most interesting part of it was about how this girl he met while working at Knott's Berry Farm got him into philosophy and he took a bunch of college courses on it and began deconstructing his performances to get deliberately absurd, becoming an act within an act within an act.  Reading this book made me like the stuff of his I like a little bit more, but I still don't like the schmaltzy stuff.
