Wolf Parade, Ghost Pressure
Expo '86 (2010)
Wolf Parade have become one of my favorite bands. This is their third album, and it's a little less urgently frenetic and a bit more uneven than the previous two, but it's still cool and catchy as hell. It's too bad, I heard they're breaking up, or going on "indefinite hiatus"next year. The members are each in about fifty other bands besides Wolf Parade, so I'm sure I'll get a fix somewhere, but I would really like to see them live.
I still haven't quite figured out how to describe their sound. Energetic speed pop, maybe? I don't know. They're really good, though, and Expo '86 is a good listen.

Best album cover of 2010? Maybe. They have a cool 80's new-wave-with-an-edge thing going.
In other news:
REALLY DIG your BMRC recommendation right now.
This is going to sound lame, but I don't care:
You know when Superman gets killed by Doomsday and then Superman is, like, reincarnated in a bunch of different entities (e.g. Man of Steel, Superboy, etc.)? The pure essence of Superman wasn't ever destroyed just sorta displaced? (Displaced in mostly lame-ass concepts...)
Well, I think prior to rock's death by disco in the 70's, its essence was most purely defined by Led Zepplin. Then, after its death, you get some bands popping up like Sabbath and G'N R, Pearl Jam, and then, its like it was gone. I thought I heard a little bit of rock's purest essence in the White Stripes garage stuff...but now I realize that BMRC has bottled it. They have it. Nobody else is rocking like they do.
You'll find heavier bands and more stadium-friendly bands, but that pure rock & roll sound is on all of their albums. Its old! Its pure! It has beauty and that edge all at once.
Anyway. Thanks.
I read your blog! I've never heard of these guys, but that song sounded right up my alley.
Why is Ben leaving messages about BRMC on the Wolf Parade post and messages about Josh Ritter on the Gorrilaz post? Not cool, Ben. Not cool.
Sheree, to be honest, some of my picks this year may well be flash in the pan snapshots of what I was listening to this year for particular reasons rather than what I really like and will still be listening to in several years. But Wolf Parade is not one of those picks. Their first two albums are masterpieces, in my opinion, and while I don't think Expo '86 quite lives up to either of them, it's still way better than 99.99934% of the stuff that is out there.
